Tire Pump Dance

I invented a new dance.  My husband calls it the tire pump dance.  Watch out all you sprinkler move dancers, because here I come!  #tirepumpdance, #silly

Fun Fact Friday: Lavender

Lavender essential oil is widely know for its calming and relaxing properties.  I mentioned in a previous post that Cesar Milan uses it to help calm dogs :) Lavender also helps support sleep.  It's a great smell to add to homemade laundry detergents, bedding, etc.  And it even can help the body defend against seasonal allergies.   

But a big benefit of Lavender was discovered accidentally!

I was listening to an essential oil chemistry class by Dr. Robert Pappas (which I highly recommend if you're interested in that kind of stuff) and he mentioned that one of the big benefits of lavender: helping the body heal from burns was discovered by accident!

French chemist and scholar René-Maurice Gattefossé (who coined the term Aromatherapie) was working in his perfumery lab and there was an explosion.  His hands were on fire and he dunked them in a nearby vat, which happened to be lavender.  He later noted the increased healing time and that little to no scarring had occurred.  In World War I, he actually treated soldiers with essential oils and is now known as the Father of Aromatherapy.  #funfactfriday, #drpappas, #lavender, #essentialoils

Turmeric Tea from Dr. Josh Axe

For wellness Wednesday I'm posting a wonderful tea recipe courtesy Dr. Josh Axe (draxe.com).  It's my new favorite tea!    I LOVE tea and I love Turmeric, so Turmeric Tea is OMG!  (sounds like a song)

I tried it last night and it was amazing.  I made half the recipe, so that I just had one cup.  And I substituted Coconut oil for ghee.  It was creamy and tasted yummy!  It didn't smell like Turmeric or taste like Turmeric (though I love the taste of Turmeric, I wasn't sure how I would feel about it in tea).

I've always loved Turmeric and eat it in Indian food and I take a supplement with it in it, but I was looking for other ways to consume Turmeric because of the anti-inflammatory properties, and found it last night when I saw this recipe!  Thank you Dr. Axe!  #draxe, #turmeric, #wellnesswednesday, #healthytea

Turmeric Tea Recipe

Total Time: 5 minutes
Serves: 2

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup coconut milk
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tbsp ghee  (I used coconut oil)
  • 1 tbsp raw honey
  • 1 tsp Turmeric (powder or grated root)

Directions:

  1. Pour coconut milk and water into the saucepan and warm for 2 minutes
  2. Add in butter, raw honey and turmeric powder for another 2 minutes
  3. Stir and pour into glasses.

No to Monsanto!

I recently watched an episode about Monsanto on VICE.  Then I saw this article (LINK BELOW)  by Dr. Josh Axe that explains more about Monsanto and the negative implications of GMO better than I ever could.

I urge you to take a few minutes and read this article and then stand up for your right to clean, healthy, non contamintaed, non GMO food!  And for goodness sake, don't buy Round- UP.  There are natural weed killers (using vinegar) and there are essential oils that are successfully used to protect plants against insects.  Support organic farmers and restaurants like Chipotle that use non GMO products.  #noGMO, #draxe, #organic, #noMonsanto, #health, #loveChipotle

Meditation: Observe your Breath


It's Meditation Monday!  #meditationmonday, #mondaymeditation.  This Monday I'm going to start with one simple meditation technique and over the weeks I'll be revealing more.

Today's simple meditation tip is to start by OBSERVING YOUR BREATH.

Start by taking a few minutes today by just observing your breath.  You don't have to be sitting, you can do it while walking, emptying the dishwasher OR watching TV.  Though some people find it helpful when first starting to close their eyes and remove distractions, but once you're familiar with this technique, you should be able to do it anywhere!

Just observe your breath as it goes inside and outside!  That's it.  It's that simple.

I've attached a link to a YouTube video that I did 5 years ago (when my hair was brown or when I was dying it brown, lol) that describes FIVE simple meditation techniques.  The first one is this one.  You can watch the video up to this technique and then save the others for the following weeks or you can skip ahead and watch them all!  (I have a whole library of meditation videos)

Meditation Monday - A Visual Meditation


For Meditation Monday I wanted to share a "Visual Mediation" that I created and did the voice over for, a few years back.  The wonderful music is from my friend Eric Montgomery. And the great footage is from my friends at HDenvironments (used with permission).  (See below for more information)

Literally watching a sunset or looking at the ocean can BE a meditation.  I'd encourage you to take 10 minutes and watch this video and meditate.  It gives you some guidance, but you can also go out and look at the ocean, or sit in the forest or park and meditate in real nature!  This video will hopefully show you how!  Enjoy!  #meditation, #meditationmonday, #visualmeditation

Fruit is NOT an F word!

Well, it is, but it's not a bad one.

I LOVE my fruit!  Especially now with all the berries and melons in season.  I'm in Heaven!  But some people treat fruit like it's the F word.  They say you should avoid it because of all the sugar. 

Since I've transitioned to a whole food plant based diet, I have been staying away from refined sugar.  But does that mean I shouldn't eat fruit?  

Then I saw an  article from Forks Over Knives  (See below the video for the actual link) and had to share the information. It basically points out that there is a HUGE difference between sugar from refined sugar and from fruit.  Fruit contains fiber and antioxidants, refined sugar does not.  Fruit lowers cholesterol, reduces heart disease and strengthens the immune system.  Refined sugar does not.
