Simple Tips to Making Sure You're Drinking Enough Water

Most people are chronically dehydrated and yet our bodies are made up of 60% water.  We NEED water to live and to function optimally.  It has been recommended that you should drink half of your weight in ounces of water.

So, if for example, you weigh 140 lbs, half your weight would be 70.  You would need to drink 70 oz of water a day.  That would be eight 8oz glasses plus a little over half glass!

I know, for me, it was hard to drink that much water because one, water is boring, I didn't like the flavor and two, I found it hard to keep track of how much waterI was drinking.  I would start out with good intentions and drink my 8 oz glass of water in the morning, another one before lunch, then I'd lose count or forget.   Until I figured out a system!

Here are simple tips to make sure you're drinking the right amount of water every day!

1)  When you're at home, fill a glass pitcher with your correct amount of water and drink from the pitcher until it's gone!  This has helped me immensely.  I pre-measured my 70 ounces one time and then filled the beautiful glass pitcher I got at Home Goods above.  I only pre-measured once because now I know that I have to fill the pitcher a little past the blue line.  (You can mark your pitcher with a Sharpee or tape).  Then I continually pour water into a glass and drink from the pitcher throughout the day!

2) For on the go or work, know how many to-go bottles you need to reach your water quota and fill it and sip it throughout the day.  I bought great glass bottles at Costco  (if you flavor your water, which I'll explain below, you will definitely want glass bottles and pitchers)  This glass bottle is 20 oz, so I know I have to drink three full bottles and a half bottle!  By carrying the bottle with me in the car,  on my walk, etc, I constantly sip it throughout the day.

3) Flavor your water with citrus.  This has been THE tip that has made me enjoy water!  I used to wake up every morning and squeeze fresh lemon or put orange slices in my water.  It's great if you can do this.  But recently since I've been introduced to essential oils I've been putting drops of the essential oils into my water and it's easy!  (If you'd like to know more about essential oils email me at  I flavor my water with Lemon, Lime, Grapefruit and Orange, depending on my mood.  Love water now!  Please note, that if you are using citrus oils to flavor your water, you should drink from GLASS bottles or pitches.  Citric acids can break down plastic and you wouldn't want to be ingesting the plastic from your water!  Plus I'm concerned about BPA anyway, so I've switched all my bottles and pitchers to glass!  Like I said, Costco had a two pack of glass bottles for around $17! 

Hope these tips help you to start drinking more water.  And don't be discouraged when you first start if you have to run to the restroom every half hour.  Your body will adapt and it won't be an issue.  Though I also recommend drinking all of your water at least 2-3 hours before bedtime so you won't have to get up in the night!
